Zahar, firstly: thanks for allowing to use the photos of young in our gallery (with your name). We shall see, if we need a better quality.
Secondly: all the best to you and your friends for a fishing trip to Pekan some day in the future!!

Super Bilder

Beitragvon emha » 30.03.2006 - 12:18

Danke Karen und Geert für das Einstellen der Bilder. Na, erkennt ihr die rote Tönung bei den P. "Mimbon". (A last joke!).

If I may - why is it sp. aff. alfredi? Not a positive ID yet perhaps?

Yes, sp. aff. is generally used in scientific names, and means it is a species that hasn't been determined yet, but is very similar to a species that is already known.

Best wishes,
Karen

Yes I know what it stands for and when it's used, though I was wondering why all of a sudden so many sp. aff. turn up. I hope there are ways for postive ID's :D

@ Stefan : When you have a species or variety that can't be determined yet, you have several valid options to name it.
You can use or make up a trade name, for example Parosphromenus sp. "Manis Mata", Parosphromenus sp. "blue line". When the species is not identified but it is known where the fish has been catched, you may choose to name them for example Parosphromenus sp. "Bukit Merah".
Or you can use a name that reflects the appearance of the fish; what known species does it look like (if any)? For example Paroshromenus sp. aff. alfredi. A pro of this option compared to a 'fantasy' trade name is that the name tells what the fish looks like. That may be an explanation why people like to use this option (more than some time ago? I'm not aware of that, but it's possible).

@ Zahar : no need to pardon, it's a good question! "Mimbon" is a large fish import company in Germany. "98" reflects the year (1998) in which the original pair of this strain has been purchased by their original owner/breeder, Martin Hallmann. Mimbon traded these fish, but it is unknown what their natural habitat was (is).
Originally, Martin named these fish P. sp. aff. bintan "Mimbon 98". After reading the description of the recently described species P. alfredi, Martin opted to rename them to P. sp. aff. alfredi "Mimbon 98". This lead to a discussion; it turned out that Martin's fish of this species clearly show red spots in their finnage (like P. alfredi), but I have offspring of these fish and I never see red in their finnage... Martin may think I might be partially colorblind, but be assured : I can see red in the picture of the P. filamentosus female that I posted ;-).

Kind regards,
Karen

Thanks Karen; so it's still to be determined if they're for example alfredi or something else (new?).
